The Claw, a machine built to safely and ergonomically remove barge lids, is manufactured from start to finish at Oertel Metal Works. We also provide replacement and maintenance parts for existing customers. The hooks of the lid lift are painted at Oertel in its iconic bright green to add aesthetic and durability. The Claw Lid Lifter is a fully mechanical patent pending design (designed by Chuck Gifford of JJB Solutions and distributed by TSF Marine Equipment). All fabricated parts are hot dipped galvanized for corrosion resistance in harsh environments. The Claw has a "T" head that pins on the top. Using a material handler and a clamshell bucket you close around the top of the "T" to lift the device. Then, with the arms in the release mode, center over the lid and set down with the wheels on the arms lining up in the recesses of the lid. The bucket is lowered approximately 2 feet to activate the catch/release mechanism. Once it cycles the bucket is lifted and the arms pull in. The hooks on the end of the arms grab the lift eyes on the lid. The lid is lifted and set in place. To release, the bucket is once again lowered 2 feet and the catch/release mechanism cycles. Lifting the bucket the lifter comes up and the hooks release. Typical operations use up to 5 employees to hook and unhook lids - with two people climbing on top of the barge to secure chains on the barge lid. The Claw allows for 1 operator to accomplish the work of those employees unassisted. This is a huge step for safety in the barge industry - getting employees off of the barges completely. Further, considering the industry's shortage of labor staff can be redeployed to other tasks or enjoy labor cost savings.

One of the coolest things we reman at Fort Dodge Transmission is torque converters! Once a torque converter arrives in our shop, it’s sent over to our torque converter rebuilder for a little TLC. We start by cutting the torque converter open on the lathe, then all of the parts are separated from the unit. It gets cleaned up, then all the parts are inspected, new parts are placed in the tq, which is then put back together, checked for proper height, welded, leak checked, lockup checked if it can be, balanced and painted, ready to go for our customer. What makes us stand apart is that, from teardown to rebuilding, everything is manufactured in house in our Fort Dodge Shop! These torque convertors will eventually end up on our transmissions, whether the ones we reman in our shop or ones that customers have in their shops.
